Welcome

Great that you made it here!
Chances are high that if you are reading this, you are interested in psychotherapy as a way to improve your life. Congrats on this huge step! Why? Because for many people this step can be the final action in a long lasting struggle of trying to solve issues on your own. But it is a great step as you decided to no longer accept whatever you are dealing with but are getting curious about how professional psychotherapy might assist you and are now on the road to taking action.

Especially in today’s society, where top performance has become a pseudo standard, it appears that there is no room for having flaws in connection to your mental health. In some groups more than others, this created an illusion that only very few people suffer from psychological issues with the unfortunate effect that also you might have felt very lonely when realizing that there is something you really need help with.

Instead of normalizing issues in a potentially unhealthy way and just accepting your situation, psychotherapy very often opens doors to a life you have never dreamt of. No matter whether you are struggling with a form of anxiety, depression, work-related stress, a traumatic experience or low self-esteem, talking to someone who helped many people to structurally and durably overcome mental health related issues is the most efficient way to significantly increase your quality of life. After all, engaging in psychotherapy does not mean you give up control but to get to know yourself better and learn new ways to better be in control.

The importance of a good connection
Talking about potentially very intimate details of your life needs sufficient trust. While you are cognitively aware that you are not disclosing private information to a random person but to someone who needs to follow strict privacy laws, it still might not feel right in the beginning. This is very normal, as even this professional is someone you do not know yet and also with this person trust needs to grow and cannot just instantly exist in the very first session. Only if you are feeling comfortable and safe to disclose private information, ask questions or, if the need arises, express criticism if something is not working as expected, therapy can be effective. In order for this to happen you need to feel understood and validated in the way you experience the world, including your emotional reactions to specific events in it. The scientific term for this special relationship with a psychotherapist is called the “therapeutic relationship” and the importance of focusing on this element of therapy is not only common sense - multiple studies could provide evidence that it can predict the effectiveness of psychotherapy by up to 30%. In line with these findings, working with me means that we will spend sufficient time at a speed that is comfortable for you to work on this special relationship. It also means that you will remain in control of the therapeutic process which also entails that you will never be forced to change or give up something if you are not ready for this.

An eclectic and individualized approach to psychotherapy
During the long tradition of psychotherapy a lot of psychotherapeutic approaches came to life and while the passionate literature of trying to show one is better than the other might be entertaining for a very selective audience, I strongly believe that every client and every issue is unique to a certain degree and therefore also demands an unique approach. One of the most significant differences between certain approaches dictates to either mainly focus on the past and seeing how it resonates in the present versus exclusively focusing on the present and mostly ignoring the past. In my opinion the right approach is somewhere in between. Hence, if you for example had a safe and healthy environment while growing up yet struggle with an issue in the present it might not make a lot of sense to you to keep talking about your childhood and maybe, strongly phrased, create problems that are not there. The same is true if you just do not feel like talking about your past in great detail but want to cope better with the daily struggles you experience. On the other hand, maybe something in your past led to a certain issue you experience now and it would help you a lot to connect the dots and leverage this knowledge to grow the motivation to change the way you experience and behave in situations.

Multicultural therapy
Next to being a psychologist I also have a Master’s Degree in Sociology and developed a keen interest in intercultural communication and migration. With this theoretical background I migrated to the Netherlands myself and embarked on the fascinating experience of studying what it means to build a life outside your home country from a very personal perspective. Next to being a psychologist I also work at Leiden University where, next to teaching at the Psychology department, I’m currently busy with developing a research project about the impact of intercultural aspects on the therapeutic relationship. I’m furthermore speaking English, German and Dutch on an academic level and I’m comfortable to work in all these languages.
